PLACES TO VISIT

Flamingo Gardens

This is a true gem in South Broward County. Easily accesible, Flamingo Gardens is located on Flamingo Rd, just south of I-595.

Flamingo Gardens is a botanical garden originally founded by the Wrays in the 1920’s. It is big enough to ensure at least a couple of hours of entertainment, has numerous tropical plants which thick foliage provides nice shade, a plus in South Florida. It has a few animal displays, a tram tour of the gardens, wildlife encounters and more. It is almost never crowded which makes it very comfortable.

This place holds a special spot in my heart. Was both of our children first outing as well as the backdrop for beautiful family, pregnancy and halloween pictures. Our children absolutely LOVE it. They can safely run around and enjoy nature while being physically active. My two and a half year old already knows where everything is as has become our own little tour guide. For almost 3 years now we have gotten the annual pass which has been totally worth every penny and not only that but through the visits, purchases and membership we are supporting their mission as taken from their website:

Flamingo Garden’s mission is to depict, preserve, and provide education about the natural and cultural heritage of South Florida and the Everglades in our botanical gardens and wildlife sanctuary:

  • by providing a repository for endangered plant and wildlife species and a living library of specific taxa available for research and education.
  • by inspiring an appreciation for the beauty and diversity of tropical and subtropical plants from around the world that can be grown in our area.
  • by guiding the public in environmentally responsible and aesthetic horticultural practices.
  • by encouraging environmental awareness and Everglades preservation to visiting tourists, residents, and school children.

But let’s allow the pictures to show you what we are talking about! Scroll back up for the picture gallery and visit our homepage for my own “black and red” take on the gardens.
